Hyouka Episode 7 Posted on: June 6, 2012 | 501 views Impression: Definitely, a great improvement from last week’s episode in terms of the mystery being explored. What was interesting was how various seemingly ordinary factors were pieced together one-by-one to form the resolution. This was all coated with the cuteness of the female cast throughout the episode, plus, they closed it off with a simple, but meaningful anecdote. Overall, it was a joy to watch where I felt that not a scene was wasted. I was really surprised when Mayaka showed concern for Houtarou when he passed out at the hot springs. I was sort of expecting some sarcasm from her instead. But what’s more astounding was Houtarou having lewd thoughts about Eru. I thought his pacifism was extreme to the point where he’s above having fantasies of a female body. However, the fact that he’s a guy could be a reasonable enough explanation. As for this week’s mystery though, I honestly didn’t think that there was a ghost to begin with and without a doubt, the deduction in regards to the shadow in room number seven would be plain and simple like for most of the other mysteries that we’d come across thus far. But what made the journey of uncovering this mystery so spectacular was its consistency towards the theme of the episode; the sibling relationship. Next week, we’ll have an introduction to another character (most likely a minor one at best) who will deliver our next mystery. Looks like the classics club is really turning into some sort of detective agency as the preview suggests that they’ll be studying a video footage of a group going on a hike in the woods. I could guess roughly that they’d be asked to explain a certain creature that pops up out of nowhere and Houtarou will be right in the center of the investigation process like he always has. Recap The classics club members go on a summer trip to the hot springs thanks to Eru‘s invitation and Mayaka‘s connections. Since the inn that they’re staying at was undergoing renovations, the gang was offered to stay for free. On arrival they were given a warm welcome by the inn owners’ two daughters, Mayo (the older sister) and Kayo (the younger sister). After enjoying a luxurious dinner, Houtarou heads out to the hot springs, but ended up passing out while being overwhelmed over the thought of Eru bathing behind the wooden fence on the other side of the hot spring. He was taken back and laid to rest thanks to the help of both Mayaka and Satoshi. While resting, he overheard Mayo telling a disturbing story about a guest who hung himself inside room number seven before it was discovered that he’d been embezzling money from his own company. Just before calling it a night, he notices a dark figure outside the window dashing out into the roadside. Houtarou woke up next morning to discover Mayaka traumatized from witnessing a shadow at the room across their window (the same room seven from Mayo’s story) which resembled that of a person being hung. Eru also confirmed the sighting herself. During breakfast, Houtarou made an uncanny discovery that Mayo was the only person that had her name on her property. Further similar discoveries confirmed his suspicion after being convinced by Eru to investigate. The two decided to ask Kayo for access to room seven, but she was uncooperative. So instead, they patrolled the exterior of the building where room seven was and Houtarou discovered that the soil around the outside of the building was wet. Houtarou considered all the evidence he came across thus far and came up with a deduction, which, he reported to Eru. He concluded that the shadowy figure in room seven was in fact the yukata that Mayo presented in the afternoon, which, had been borrowed by Kayo for the festival the previous evening without her knowledge. The rain during the night of the festival forced Kayo to hang it to dry in the unused room seven while everyone was asleep. The fact that Kayo had not asked her sister to borrow the yukata was attributed to Mayo‘s possessiveness of her property, which, was supported by the various objects being labeled with Mayo‘s name but not Kayo‘s. Kayo‘s suspicious behavior throughout the day further supports Houtarou‘s theory. Houtarou recalled Eru expressing her enviousness of the relationship between siblings. He tells her that reality was far from her imagination. That was until witnessing before him the figure of Mayo carrying Kayo back to the inn, to which, he did little but sigh on the discovery.
