Hyouka Episode 6 Posted on: May 29, 2012 | 515 views Impression: Words alone could not express the utter disappointment I felt after watching this week’s episode. Just when I was expecting a fresh start from last week’s resolution to Eru‘s dilemma, they hit us with another one. And what’s worse was that it didn’t feel like a mystery at all. Or rather, it was more like meaningless banter inside a box (aka. classroom). It made me wonder what the directors were trying to accomplish with this episode. I wouldn’t mind having a stall episode if it’s an action series like Railgun, but for a mystery focused series like this, it just doesn’t work. The only thing I found attractive about the episode was the numerous scenes displaying the cuteness of Eru‘s reactions to various situations such as the scene where she’s being teased by Satoshi and Mayaka. Throughout the whole episode, the only thing that I found worthwhile was Houtarou‘s contrast between his gray personality with Eru‘s rose color personality. I do agree that having the moe factor in this type of series is important, however, there needs to be at least some obvious degree of meaningfulness to the episode so that there’s something for the viewer to take away after watching. Next episode, the main cast heads over to the bath house. I’m hoping that the few scenes in the preview is part of their upcoming school trip. This would mean that we’ll potentially be exposed to some worthwhile mysteries to put our minds on. They better spice things up next time as I am uncertain of how many more disappointments I can endure. Recap Houtarou was amidst of a boring history class when he and his classmates were interrupted by an uproar coming from class 1A. The voices of the math teacher as well as Eru‘s abruptly transformed the atmosphere within Houtarou‘s class. Eru later arrived to the clubroom to find Satoshi and Mayaka in the middle of an argument. While Eru made attempts to stop their constant bickering, it was Houtarou who was successful in the task. The conclusion of Satoshi and Mayaka‘s dispute lead to their discussion of Eru‘s perfectionism, which, lead to her sudden outburst. Upon her expression of anger, Houtarou thoughtlessly referred it to the incident with her argument with the maths teacher, which, sparked Eru‘s curiosity. Thus Houtarou was involuntarily forced into another mystery. Eru explained that the incident involved the math teacher assuming that the class had progressed further in the syllabus than they really did, which, lead to a misunderstanding with the students. However, Eru was uncertain of why she became angry and how the teacher made such a mistake. The theory of mixing up dates was ruled out, because that would’ve only lead to a slower progression. The theory that the teacher’s edition was outdated was also ruled out as the school issues a new one every year. Houtarou thought hard for an explanation that Eru would be satisfied with. Realizing that his own class (1D) has already covered the topic presented to Eru‘s class at the time of the incident, he came to the conclusion that the teacher may have mixed up the lower case letters a and d, which, he’d used as to note each classes’ progression. With the mystery solved, Houtarou pondered upon the reason why Eru got angry during that incident and deduced that she may have hated herself for not believing that the teacher had his reasons for making the mistake. While Houtarou admitted that he can at least comprehend Eru‘s intentions, he can never hope to understand her entirely.
