Hyouka Episode 2 Posted on: April 30, 2012 | 408 views Impression: Just when things couldn’t get any more nostalgic, this week’s episode served us a similar scene from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya where the main protagonist would make his usual stroll to the clubroom. Only in this instance, the clubroom had almost everything they needed so I’m not expecting the group to obtain gear from other clubs or places by means of extortion. And yet again, Houtarou gets himself dragged into another troublesome mystery by the air-headed Eru. Funny enough, the fact that she’s portrayed as a model student was rather amusing given that she’d been easily fooled by Houtarou‘s reasoning for the previous mysterious. Despite Satoshi warning him that Eru cannot be fooled forever, her true reactions in the event that she does discover Houtarou‘s real motives are uncertain and may fall under many possibilities. Maybe she’d deny it altogether and continue to trust Houtaro regardless. But that will lead to drama territory and I prefer that this series do not head towards that direction. The introduction of Ai Kayano‘s character Mayaka was a rather astounding one since it seemed like a total different character than the roles she played in the past. In fact, I sensed a lack of similarity of all the roles she played so far. Thus, it always thrilled me whenever her involvement in a series was announced. As for the character Mayaka, though, I was expecting her to be an affectionate childhood friend character towards Satoshi, but never have I imagined that she’d turn out to be a tsundere. Well, to be honest, I think it’ll turn out more interesting this way as the classics club could really use someone who can spice things up. Like last week, we have yet another seemingly ordinary mystery of people borrowing the same book and returning it within the same time frame. This is leading me to assume that the focus of this series is more on the humor rather than the actual mysteries themselves, which, were always told in a way that made it sound malicious and twisted. Thus, it’d be hard for me to expect anything different in subsequent episodes, well, at least not at this point in time. And finally, the episode ended in a rather startling manner. Though, the perceived love confession may as well turn out to be an exaggerated partnership in relation to the newly revived classics club. They’re really limiting the amount of visual cues in the preview so I’ll just leave the rest to my own imagination. Recap As he prepared for school, Houtarou reminisced his sister’s request to join the classic literature club. Before long, he developed a habit of going to the club room to pass time. One afternoon, Eru complained over the tardiness of the classic literature club and proposes to present an anthology for the upcoming school cultural festival. Houtarou lacked motivation over the idea but Eru‘s constant urges somehow convinced him to provide his assistance. However, that was the least of his worries as neither Eru nor himself knew what to base the anthology on. They scoured the remnants of the clubroom for clues but to no avail. Houtaro was involuntarily dragged along by the highly enthusiastic club president to the library in search of previous anthologies. What what they found there was a rather disturbed middle schoolmate of Houtaro‘s, Mayaka, who was asked to take the post of the librarian. Satoshi, who also attended the same middle school as Houtarou and Mayaka makes an appearance and entranced Eru with another mystery, much to Houtarou‘s chagrin. The mystery itself involved the school’s history edition, which, coincidentally had been borrowed and returned within the same time frame each week by 5 different students. Thinking that no one would possibly borrow such a book with such frequency, the group attempted to come up with other motives for the use of the book. However, not a single logical hypothesis came to mind. That was until Eru noticed the smell of paint thinner coming from the book, triggering Houtarou‘s enlightenment in the process. Eru, Mayaka and Houtarou made their way to the artroom while Satoshi stayed behind to hold up the fort. It was there that Houtarou‘s suspicions were confirmed, revealing that the school history edition was simply used as a model for the portrait of each student that borrowed it. With the mystery solved, the three returned to the library and discussed the excitement of their endeavor. Upon acknowledgement of Eru as a top student, she humbly expressed dissatisfaction of knowledge that she’d already acquired and instead favoring the unknown. Before long, the librarian returned, bringing news of the classic literature club’s previous anthologies as being non-existent. Houtarou received a call from Eru on a Sunday morning and requested to meet with him. They did so at a cafe. However, Houtarou soon grew impatient over Eru‘s hesitation of expressing the purpose of the invitation, but she eventually acknowledged that she did indeed have something important to tell him.
