Chihayafuru Episode 24 Posted on: March 21, 2012 | 334 views Recap: Chihaya arrived at Taichi’s residence to watch the Queen+Meijin Championships on his widescreen TV, but was greeted by his unwelcoming mother. The two were soon joined by rest of the karuta club members who had the same intention. The heated battle between Yumi and Shinobu was already in progress as the TV screened flickered on. Yumin was fighting to reclaim her title of queen, but to the group’s surprise, Shinobu seemed to have gained excessive weight since they last met. Apparently had consumed excessive amounts of snacks in order to obtain a rare piece of merchandise. Yumi took Shinobu’s weight gain as an insult and determines to crush her. The match was a best of three sets and Yumi was able to gain the upper hand by attacking her presumed weakness of extended matches. It was revealed in a flashback that when Shinbu’s parents divorced when she was young child. Her grandmother had ordered her to take part in some sort of beneficial activity. Before long, Shinobu develops an unmatched facination for karuta cards and told to attend a local karuta society. Remembering the strong bond she shared with her karuta cards, Shinobu’s sharp instincts rekindled abruptly, turning the match around in her favor in the process. Yumi was unable to hold herself against Shinobu’s rampage and ultimately lost the competition. Deeply distressed over her loss, the encouragement she later received by her fellow club members helped convince her to try again. The competition was far from over as the battle for the title of Meijin continues. Yousei advises Chihaya to observe the current Meijin, Suo Hisashi more closely as his play-style resembles that of Chihaya’s. As subsequent cards were read out, Chihaya was able to witness the smoothness of Suo’s unmatched techniques. Impression I actually thought that this was suppose to be the last episode but discovered otherwise due to the suspenseful closure to the episode, prompting me to check the Anime News Network site. That aside, I did enjoy the episode despite team Mizusawa not being the ones in action. I found the revelation of Shinobu’s past to be rather interesting, except that it didn’t explain how she developed her sadistic nature. Nevertheless I was actually cheering for Shinobu to win the entire time since I still had a grudge against Yumi from her match with Chihaya. Shinobu’s weight gain did catch me by surprise and didn’t initially recognize her until they gave her introduction. Now all that’s left is the match for the title of Meijin. It goes without saying that Suo will ultimately hold his title since his opponent didn’t seem to be in a mental state to pull off a miraculous upset. I guessing the conclusion to the real finale next week will reveal renewed determination of the main cast in their journey in the ways of karuta.
